I visited Beatrix Potter’s house at Hill Head in Cumbria and was taken by the pale green garden gate leading through to the vegetable plot and so it became a focal point for this painting. I’m sure I spotted a distant relative of Peter Rabbit poking his head up through the vegetables and flowers.
